Concrete Preparation for Acid Staining

Question:

I am prepping an existing slab for acid staining. There is paint splatter & caulk stains on concrete I must get up. Also, I would like to remove thin set in kitchen. Is there a Blastrac product that would take up the stains like a sander would? Can you control how much concrete is lost? Would a Blastrac shotblaster leave obvious marks or patterns on the floor? Where can I find a rental in San Antonio Texas? Thanks for any help.

John Rippman:

In response to your question, shotblasting would not be the best method for preparing the substrate to accept a concrete stain system. It would leave a noticeable pattern where you overlap the blast patterns.

1.
I would recommend using a hand scraper to remove the bulk of the drywall and paint dollups. If you have tack strips from carpet, do not pry them or pull them up. This will create holes that you will need to patch and the patched areas will not match the rest of the concrete substrate. Remove them by using a keyhole saw and carefully sawing around the nail heads.

2.
Then, use a Dremel tool to cut the nail flush to the floor. This is the way the pros do it.

3.
Once you have completed that, I would then use the Sawtec 7"Grinder Vac fitted with the CG-725DTBLUE cup wheel to grind the floor to prepare for your stain. You then could follow that step with the same grinder fitted with an abrasive grinding disc to produce a semi-honed finish to accept your stain system.

With the Sawtec 7” Grinder Vac, you can also use the BDC-1216 to minimize dust and other pollutants in the air. The Blastrac BDC-1216 is designed of high-strength plastic which will not dent or rust and will run on 120 volts of electricity. It is ideal for this grinder and tight areas where you wish to keep the air pure and the job professional.

No matter the condition of the surface, what obstructions or imperfection your surface has endured, the staff at Blastrac is capable and ready to answer your questions whether about our grinders or line of other products. Call or email us today for help with your grinding and other surface preparation needs.
